Eclectic, funky and very "green," Savory is Takoma Park's
answer to the neighborhood coffee bar. The city
located just over DC's border is an
ex-hippie and current hippie enclave -- yes, there
is a Free Burma Society here. And Savory
serves its clientele well with locally roasted and shade-grown
coffees, vegetarian and vegan fare, and soy milk. Occasionally, area
writers read their poetry or fiction. |
| Decorated
in soft yellow and off-white, Savory is a relaxed
gathering spot and a busy weekend brunch stop, with
frittatas, granola and plenty of desserts, including
vegan chocolate cake. The three levels of tables and
chairs and a small outdoor area do a good job of holding
the coffee bar's many customers. The basement provides
pure coffee-shop idle time as an adults-only area
with couches, a full magazine rack and works by local
artists adorning the walls. The ambience fits perfectly
into the quaint downtown area and the Takoma Park
frame of mind. -- Lori Robertson. |
